So i've realized something...so many pieces of clothing sold nowadays tend to look exactly like vintage clothes, but are over priced. I'm mainly talking about one store in particular, which would be Urban Outfitters. I've always loved Urban Outfitters, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I just feel like they can be a bit pricy.

Something i've noticed was the oversized sweaters that they were selling for around $60 to $70!

A solution to this? Vintage clothing! Thrift stores can be a little overwhelming, and sometimes scary to people. I know for me, it was the smell. If you look hard enough, it's easy to find clothing for much cheaper.

The vintage section of Etsy has a bunch of cute clothes. Here are a few cute thing i've found on etsy:

Recently i've come across a few items that are so incredibly cute and make baking so much easier!

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of cake pops? Well...I stumbled across a cake pop maker! But not only cake pops, the Babycakes Shop sells all kinds of cute makers!

The cake pop maker...how easy is that to make cake pops? They aren't the traditional crumbled cake mixed with icing, but rather the cake batter cooks in the form of a ball. What I like about this is that they aren't as sweet.

The cupcake maker. I love this, not only can you make cupcakes, but all kinds of things such as small pizzas and mini pot pies!

The pie maker. It's currently not available, but it's coming soon.

Of course, there are many cute other products at the Babycakes shop.

I definitly suggest checking it out. Some of these makers are going on my christmas list for sure ;)

Red Hair Dye Experience

Guess who has red in her hair?!? Yep you guessed it, I finally managed to get the time to put color in my hair. I've been wanting to do this for a very long time, but I was either too scared or did not have the time.

Overall, I was very happy with the result of the color. It was very bright and vibrant. Although I had originally wanted it a darker red color, I still love the color that it turned out to be.

My advice for self-bleaching hair, would be to make sure to leave the bleach in for the maximum time, especially if you have dark brown/black hair. I technically did not need ot leave it in a long amount of time because I was putting another color over top. I was actually scared at one point, because since I only left the bleach in for about half of the time, and being as this is the first time I had ever done something like this, my bleached hair ended up looking like an orange coor rather than blonde.

Once my hair was nice and bleached, used Manic Panic Pillarbox Red color. The color was a bit brighter than I had thought. It looks more of a hot pink, especially in the sun.

I think I just fell in love with the clothing from . So cute! I have such an itch to buy more clothing for summer, but I know I shouldn't considering I've already reached my spending limit! I think I have some sort of addiction to buying clothes, ah well, it's better than being addicted to drugs, right?

Tumblr Inspiration

I've always wanted to dye my hair this color. It may happen soon, because I have already boughten the bleach and red hair dye. I don't think I am going to dye my entire head, but maybe just a few highlights. Not sure, we'll have to see! :)

So, another update! I arranged all of my fabric today. Step one of the etsy shop process, I guess. I'm still not finished yet with school, finals are next week, so after that i'll have a lot more free time!

I also ordered a few new pieces of clothing from Forever 21 today! It was much needed, i'm more of a fall/winter girl and I really don't have much clothing for warmer weather. I would much rather wear tights, scarves, and hats all year long!!

An Update...Finally?!?

Hey everyone! I just wanted to make a post in order to finally update this blog. It seems as though it's been so long since my last post. Well, I guess the fact was that I needed to take a little break from my blog and shop. The past couple of months have been crazy. I've mainly been working on a lot of drawings for my college portfolio, and keeping up with school work.

After a long absence, i'd like to announce that well, i'm finally back! Within the next month or two I will be working on setting up a completely new etsy shop. It's going to be a surprise, so there is not much I can say about it. Everyone will just have to wait and see. All I can say, is that it is going to have a new style than the last.

I will be updating the blog more regularly. With updates of the upcomming shop, and tons of new inspiration.

Hope to talk to you guys again soon, and hopefully everyone didn't completely abandom my blog :O.

Feather Hair Accessories Tutorial

Time to get into the Thanksgiving spirit! I have been wanting to do a feather hair accessory tutorial for some time now, and I thought this time of the year was appropriate to finally post it. Whenever I think of Thanksgiving and November, feathers are what comes to mind. No matter the type of feather, they all have that certain feel to them.

You will need:
-Various feathers (can be found at any craft store)
-Plastic headbands
-Bobby pins
-A good and durable glue (I used Quick Grip)

One you have the supplies, this is a very simple tutorial. To make the headband, all I did was glue the large feather to the headband. I also used glue to put together the bobby pins and peacock feathers. These hair accessories are super easy to make, and add a perfect November touch to any outfit. Especially if you need a quick accessory for for that Thanksgiving outfit!

I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving!! I'm not a fan of turkey, but I will definitely be eating excessive quantities of mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie!!

Daily Outfit - Wild Horses

I thought it would be fun to try out doing a "daily outfit" post, and I must say, it was a lot of fun! Although, I can't wait to get a new and better camera. My small digital cyber shot isn't really doing the trick. The benefit of this picture was that I was able to finally obtain a tripod. Before that, I was taking all of my pictures by stacking books and putting the camera on top. Not the best way to go about, but it worked fine.

The outfit I put together in the second picture is a bit different, but I tried my best to create it "inspired by" the first photo. If it is hard to see, there are horses on my skirt in the first photo. Recently, lace has become one of my favorite types of fabric. I love it, and there is no doubt about the fact that I like to hoard lace clothing. Black lace, white lace, I love it all!

Today seems to be drifting by, last time I looked at the clock it was 4:00, now it's almost six! I can't believe that Thanksgiving is already this Thursday. Time flies, in the next blink of an eye it will already be Christmas! (Which I am extremely excited for!!)

Life has been crazy lately! I'm currently in the process of moving to a new house with my family, and I feel like I have been packing and lifting heavy boxes nonstop. I can't wait for things to settle down once we are situated and moved in. I get a bigger bedroom in the new house, which means more room for work stuff and decorating! I think I found a new favorite diy site! I came across P.S. I Made This while shopping around the internet making a Christmas wishlist. This site was definitely worth a blog review! Along with a fabulous site, Erica Domesek, the blogger/author also has a published book highlighting many of her diy projects.

This book is jam packed with inspiring and easy diy projects. Every diy project was inspired by iconic fashion looks and trends. The book features over 25 awesome projects!!

I'm starting a new.....

Where have I been the past few months? I've been a busy little teenager. School, focusing on college, and discovering a pile of new things. All these things absorbed me. I also felt like taking a much needed break from my blog. It ended up becoming something that I would post just to make a post, and I did not put anything into the blog posts. I felt like it was ruining my creativity, because it was not me.

Bottom line, over the next week i'm going to be revamping this entire blog. I'm changing the name, layout, and everything. I am going to start focusing the blog more on fashion. I have so much inspiration that I find on a daily basis, and I want to share it with everyone.

So what is this blog going to become?
--Basically the same thing, but a little different. I am going to be sharing diy tutorials, etsy finds, inspiration, and anything I feel like posting at the moment. I am going to try and make this blog a part of me, and put more heart into the posts.

And this, my friends, would be me

I'm currently in the process of reading The Shining by Stephen King. I am not yet very far into the book, but it is a great book, and i'd recommend it. I tend to be a slow reader, in a sense that I can never find the time to sit down and read.

Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar..Review!

So...I was finally able to purchase Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero! I was so excited about this purchase, seeing as I loved their vegan cupcake book. With tons of colorful pictures and lots of creative cookie recipes I was hoping this book could live up to the cupcake book...and I can gladly say that I may like it even more!

I've always been more of a cookie person more than cupcakes. I think cupcakes look adorable but I prefer to eat cookies.

I have already made three types of cookies since I have purchased the book and I must say that these taste even better than what one would consider "normal" cookies with eggs and butter.

1. The first cookies that I made were Sell Your Soul Pumpkin Cookies. The ingredients were fairly simple; canned pumpkin, oats, flour, sugar, etc. The aim of these cookies were to make not so much a "cake-like" cookies, but a more stiff and firm pumpkin cookie. They were delicious!

2. Second, I made the basic Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I have made different vegan chocolate chip cookie recipes in the past, many from vegweb.com, but these were by far my favorite. I think the main reason that these cookies turned out so wonderful was the fact that the author's made a note that in order to have a correct "chemical reaction" between the oil and sugar you needed to beat them together for two minutes. The cookies had a bit of a different taste than non-vegan chocolate chip cookies but for vegan cookies they were pretty good!

3. The last recipe that I tried was called Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies. These were the only cookies I managed to get a picture of, because the other batches of cookies I made were gone before I had the chance! With cocoa powder and lots of chocolate chips these cookies were very chocolately/fudgy, and great tasting. They were more cakelike and tasted like big brownies.

I am still going to keep trying out more recipes from this book, but overall I think that it's a great book and perfect for anyone who is vegan or just loves baking cookies!

Mood Nail Polish

I have just discovered mood changing nail polish and I think i'm in love, with the polish that is. My favorite has to be the color "Devious." I just love how it changes from a purple color to pink. I have heard of nail polish that changed with mood/temperature previously, but I feel like other polishes were hard to see a color change. For example, a certain brand (*ahem*Claire's*ahem*) also sells mood changing nail polish. I have used a blue-ish color that was said to change with temperature/mood. It seemed that it changed from a light blue to dark blue and was not very noticable. Now i'm not trying to slam Claire's brand nail polish, as I do own a few bottles of it, but I just do not think that they sell the best quality polish.

Fall Fashion Essentials (PART 1)

Here it is! Part 1 of my "fall fashion essentials" shopping guide. This guide is mainly a list of clothing that I have selected online, which are perfect for the upcoming season! For anyone who is still in school or college, this can also serve as more of a "back-to-school" guide.

Breezy Button-Down Shirt
I love this shirt, mainly because it's such a basic top that it can be worn so many different ways. Layer it with a jean jacket, pair it with a high-waisted skirt and jeans, or wear it open with a graphic tee/tank underneath! This is definitely going to be one of my top essentials this fall.

These are so perfect. They look great with tights, high socks, or jeans.

I know these are a bit random, but I have liked the $100 shirt from net-a-porter for awhile. I'm considering buying a plain black tee and fabric paint, then making the shirt myself. It would be a fun and easy diy project! I'll probably be wearing one of these shirts mainly in October, just because of the whole "Halloween = Skeletons" thing.

Green Tea Cupcakes Recipe

Remember how in my last post Green Tea Cupcakes were one of the five things that I am currently obsessed with? Well, I am now going to post the recipe to make the amazing little cupcakes!

First, i'm going to state that this is not my own recipe, this recipe can be found in: Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World. I highly suggest purchasing this book, it's one of my favorite cupcake books! Even though it is a vegan cupake book, I personally think that some of the cupcakes taste better than other non-vegan cupcakes.

For the Matcha Green Tea Powder,
For me, this ingredient was very hard to find. I found a variety of different green tea powders that can be purchased online, here. I'm going to admit that the prices for the green tea powder are a bit high, but the recipe does not use a very large amount.

Green Tea Cupcakes:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup soy yogurt
2/3 cup rice milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup canola oil
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 1/4 sups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3 to 4 teaspoons matcha green tea powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup granulated sugar

Directions:
1. Preheat over to 350 degrees F and line cupcake pan with liners.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt, rice milk, vanilla, oil, and almond extract, beating well to blend in yogurt. Sift in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, matcha powder, salt, and sugar. Beat a little longer to break up any large lumps. Fill liners two-thirds full and bake 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted through the center of one comes out clean. Cool before topping with glaze.

Green Tea Glaze:
2 tablespoons margarine
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoons matcha green tea powder
1 to 2 tablespoons rice milk
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Drop of vanilla extract

Directions:
1. With a fork, beat margarine to fluff, then mix in confectioners's sugar and matcha to form a crumbly mixture. Slowly beat in 1 tablespoon rice milk, almond extract, and vanilla. If icing is too thick to spread, pour in additional rice milk a teaspoon at a time and mix till desired consistency is reached.

I just wanted to update to let everyone know that I have not dissapeared, I have just not been able to blog for about a week. (maybe a little over!).

-Sewing. If I had an endless amoung of money along with this, I would buy all the fabric and patterns I needed, and then sew all my clothing.

-Cupcakes! Chocolate vegan cupcakes are my favorite. I also love chocolate chip cookies!

3.What household chore is your LEAST favorite?
-Probably folding laundry, there's just something about it that I hate.

Friday Inspiration

Wowww, I cannot believe that it is already Friday! This was such an odd week. I think it was because Monday was like a holiday due to the Fourth of July weekend. But somehow, oddly enough, the week seemed to go fast and slow at the same time. It's hard to explain.

Some inspiration/creative photos that I found....

I've had so many ideas lately! I suddenly have so many more creative ideas for just everything in general. For a little while I felt like I was running dry. I did not have many ideas for blogging, etc. My only problem is that I need to learn to organize my thoughts better. I get so many ideas, but then they just fly past me and then I soon forget them and I feel as if everything in my mind is jumbled. I am going to start making lists of everything to get better organized.

Today I bought a pattern for the garmet that i'm going to make in the sewing class that i'm taking. I will post pictures of the fabric and the pattern in an entry very soon. I cannot wait to start/finish/wear it!

"Hello Panda" Vegan Cupcakes

Today I bought some of the cutest cookies at the grocery store! "Hello Panda" strawberry filled cookies. I've seen these before, but it was in a store in Chinatown. Back when I was in Chinatown I saw them, but did not buy them. I was surprised that they were at my local grocery store! These little guys are absolutely amazing and great tasting. I was planning to make cupcakes anyway, so I thought what could be better? Pink panda cupcakes!!

The cupcakes are just a simple vegan chocolate cupcake. The recipe can be found in the book "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World." I highly recommend this book. It's filled with tons of yummy vegan cupcake recipes!

Braid Obsession.

So many pretty hairstyles...if only my hair was a bit longer. It's currently too short to braid, or do any type of hair style. But then again, I like having shorter hair. The only problem is that it grows out quickly and then it is left with no layers! If only there was a button of some sort we could press to make hair grow, shrink, and stay the same size whenever we wanted!

Happy Monday!

It's been a good Fourth of July weekend! Long, but good. I was away all weekend up until just now. There has been lots of excitement lately. I somehow managed to forget to bring my camera with me all weekend, and I wish I would have.

Here are a few things that happened the past couple days:
-Sewing Class
-Cupcakes
-Flea Markets
-Fireworks

I took my first sewing class tonight and I am so excited! It is a six week course and each class is three hours long. I haven't sewn much clothing yet so it's great to learn how to make garmets. The entire class focuses on us picking our own pattern and creating the garmet. I'm not sure what I am going to make yet, but I have a few ideas in mind. I'll be sure to show everyone on my blog the end product! Maybe even a few sketches of what I am thinking of creating. I have so many ideas for this blog! Lots of fun new things are coming soon.

I went to a flea market with my grandparents earlier today. I love looking at old and antique things, even if I don't have a place for half of the items I was to buy. There was a ton of vintage jewelry, I bought seven pieces for $5. Can you say awesome deal?

Oh, and has anyone seen any previews for that new show coming to TLC? It's called DC Cupcakes and i'm so excited! I just love love love cupcakes, and a show about them soundsn fantastic.

Candy Sushi Recipe

Yesterday afternoon my friend and I got together and made...candy sushi!

Although it can't compare with the tast of real raw fish, the candy sushi was quite delicious.

Recipe:
Ingredients:
•4 tbsp butter
•4 cups miniature marshmallows
•6 cups crispy rice cereal
•20 gummy worms
•2 boxes green-colored Fruit Roll-Ups
•30 fish-shaped gummy candies

1. Prepare a 12x17” baking sheet by lining it with waxed paper and spraying the paper with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Place 2 tablespoons of butter in a large microwave-safe bowl, and microwave until melted, about 45 seconds.

3. Add 2 cups of miniature marshmallows to the bowl, and microwave until the marshmallows are completely melted, about 1 minute, stirring every 30 seconds. Stir the mixture until it is completely smooth.

4. Add 3 cups of rice cereal and stir until completely coated. Immediately pour mixture out onto the prepared baking sheet. Spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray, and begin to press the candy into the sheet in a thin layer. Begin working from the edge of the shorter side of the sheet. The mixture will only cover approximately half of the baking sheet.

5. With the short side of the baking sheet nearest you, place a pair of gummy worms an inch from the edge. Place another pair directly below, and repeat until you have a line of worms stretching across the baking sheet.

6. Using the waxed paper to help you, roll the cereal mixture around the gummy worms, pressing firmly to make a tight roll. Take a large sharp knife and cut the log away from the rest of the mixture. Place it off to the side, and repeat the worms/rolling/cutting procedure for the remainder of the cereal.

7. Slice the logs into 1-inch rounds. Wrap each round in a strip of green-colored Fruit Roll-Ups.

8. To make the fish-topped “nigiri,” repeat steps 1-4 to make the rice candy base, but do not press the rice mixture as thinly. It should be about ¾ inch thick once pressed into the baking sheet.

9. Cut the candy into rectangles about ¾ inch by 1.5 inches. Place a candy fish on top of each rectangle, and wrap a ½-inch strip of green Fruit Roll-Up around the entire package.

Five Fashions I Love.

I have made a list of some of my favorite looks found on lookbook.nu. Lookbook is one of my favorite fashion sites. It is a site where users can submit photos of their outfits. There is so much fashion inspiration on this site!

I absolutely love the heart cutout on this dress. I don't think it would be that hard to make a heart cutout on a shirt. Just get a shirt/dress, cutout a heart shape, and then sew an outline of fabric around it.

I love the baggy white shirt with the high waisted skirt. Also, the color of the skirt is amazing.

I bought a pair of knee high socks yesterday! I'm saving them for when the weather gets a bit colder, seeing as it has been 90 degrees almost everyday here. Which i'm not a big fan of hot weather. My knee highs look a bit different. They are black and mesh, and made with a heavier knit material.

I'm currently on the lookout for a pair of colorful striped tights. I had a pair a couple years back. They were black and white striped. Sadly these tights are long gone, so I must find a new pair.

I'm also looking for a bunch of interesting shoes and boots for the next couple of seasons when it is colder outside.

I tend to have the problem when shopping, and looking at clothes, of pointing out everything that I could make instead of buying things. Sewing definitly comes in handy when it comes to this stuff. Why pay $50 for skirt when you can sew one? Why pay $30 for a scarf when it can be so easily made?

I have a few new things coming up in my blog. Yesterday at Urban Outfitters I purchased Wreck This Journal. I am going to begin posting pages of the journal as I complete them. I will have a post explaining the journal more sometime soon.

Monday Playlist

Hello!

Happy Monday! From now on i'm going to be posting a music playlist with 10 or so songs every Monday on my blog. Something to look forward to at the start of the week! The list will consist of 10 or so chosen songs each week. I love putting music together and making playlists, so why not share them? All the playlists will be able to be found in the "music" section of my blog as they are posted. (Right column, dark yellow button!)

On another note, I may be changing the name of this blog slightly very soon. The problem is that when I chose The Little Owl, I did not see if this name was taken. It seems to be used by a restaurant, and a few other bloggers and shops have very similar names. I am thinking of changing it to something more unique, and that can be remembered and found easily online. I'll notify everyone with a post before I change it. Once it is changed, I am also going to be changing the url of this blog. I'm getting a domain name on blogger so it is easier to access. I know for a fact that I hate typing thelittleowlshop.blogspot.com everytime I want to view my blog. So I know my followers must not like it either.

Weekend Inspiration/baking fun

...The theme of this inspiration is going to be....baking!

I've been wanting to bake something really badly lately, so I might just have to get in the kitchen and try out a new recipe. Yesterday I tried a new recipe that I found off of a website. Vegweb.com to be exact. This website has literally tons of free user submitted vegan recipes. Some good, some bad. I decided to try out a new chocolate chip cookie recipe. They have so many variations of cookie recipes when it comes to chocolate chip. Let's just say...these did not turn out well. They turned out to be very thin and hard. Hard as rock. But I guess you have to learn from your mistakes. I'll just have to try out new recipes until I find a good one.

Anyway, I was going to do a post of inspiration with lots of colorful baked goods, but then I came across this site, Bakeitpretty.com. This site has tons of adorable baking supplies. Here are just a few of the many they offer:

I absolutely love Regina Spektor, so I felt the need to share one of her songs. I wish there was an official music video for this song, but picture work too.

I am going to do another post very soon featuring a lot of new inventory in my shop. I'm so excited about it! As most of you know, I took a short break a little while ago from my blog. I also began slacking in my store. I have a ton of new items to add, and that's what i'm currently doign at the moment.

I have so much to do this summer, but it is all very exciting! I'm currently in the process of getting my website up, looking for inventory, a website layout, etc. It's a lot of hard work!

Even though it's summer, I am already looking forward to autumn and winter. I just never seem to know what to wear in the summer. I love layering clothing, scarves, hats, and dressing warm.

Old to New DIY

Hello,

Hope everyone's having a great weekend! I know I am.

This morning I began to go through two garbage bags of clothing that my mom did not want anymore. We were originally going to bring it to a thriftstore, but then I figured it would be better to try and make new out of the old.

It may look like a bit of a mess! All morning and afternoon i've been cutting/fixing up tons of clothing.

This "dress" was made from an old shirt. I wish I had a picture of what it looked like before. It was a type of shirt with long sleeves that "puffed out." Simple enough, all I had to do was cute them off! Then take in the top straps a bit.

Another thing to do is take old, long skirts and wear them as dresses. I am absolutely in love with the pattern on this skirt! The shrug was from Old Navy and it originally had puffy sleves, but I cut them off. Simple as that!

Well, I still have a lot more clothing to go through! It always seems to be much more fun altering clothes, rather than buying new.

I thought it would be fun to start something new on my blog. The look of the day. Now that I have a somewhat better camera, i'm going to be posting my outfits more often :).

One of my favorite things about this look is that the skirt can be worn as a skirt or a shirt. I found the skirt at Forever 21. It was a great deal, considering Forever 21 has the best prices. My jean jacket is from Topshop.

1. Tell me a little something about yourself and you blog.

My real name is Kate Yorke. I live with my partner Stewart, our daughter
Emily and dog Alfie. My blog and business is called Emily Pickle.

I have always loved designing and making. After training as a surface
pattern and textile designer I worked freelance for various companies. I
currently make pretty things which I blog about and also sell on Folksy.

2. Where do you get your inspiration?

I like to keep my bags and purses really simple and let the patterned
fabrics speak for themselves. All my items are handmade but for some
reason I like to make everything look really regular, almost mass
produced! Quality is really important to me and I try and make my bags and
purses the same shape and size. I like to set all my things out like a
little shop and put things in straight lines. I have no idea why this is!

I am inspired by bold bright cheerful patterns. I love 50's style designs
like those of Lucienne Day and also Scandinavian prints especially by
Marimekko. My favourite designer is Orla Kiely. I love her graphic retro
patterns and use of colour.

3. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?

Give it a go! Think up a name you love, take some great pictures and just
be yourself. Leave comments on your favourite blogs and also link to your
blog from twitter. I have been blogging for just over a year and have
found the support I have recieved really encouraging.

Cropped Tops - Style Guide

Yesterday I was at Topshop, (i'm going to be doing a post about it soon!), and I noticed that there were many tops that were cut off and cropped. Now these tops can look good, but they can also be a complete disaster. The key is to wearing them correctly. Here are some tips:

1) Make sure you buy the correct size. It can look a bit ridiculous if you buy it a size too big, or too small. For example, when I was trying one on at topshop I had a size too big. It just looked like a cut off potato sack.

2) Find something to wear underneath them. Let's use common sense here, most people don't walk down the street with their stomach showing. You wouldn't wear a bikini walking down the street. (Unless you want a lot of attention.)

Here are a few suggestions:

-Try a bodysuit underneath a cropped top. Pair it with shorts, pants, or a skirt. With a bodysuit, it looks like you are wearing a tucked in shirt, but there is no need to worry about it being tucked in.

--Another option to a bodysuit would be a tanktop.

-Cropped tops can also look great paired with high waisted shorts. If it was me, I would still wear a tank or bodysuit underneath.

-I'm loving topshop's knotted tie crop tops. This would be an easy diy project, using a t-shirt.

New Look, Like or Hate?

If you've already noticed, I've changed my blog layout a bit. I thought it was time for a change, a new banner, etc. I personally like it a lot more. It seems more easier to navigate. I am still in the process of changing a few things. I added some navigation to the side. I also had to change "The Little Owl" to "Little Owl Shop". I did this for a variety of reasons. It is going to be the name of my website, AND there is a restaurant in New York City with the name The Little Owl. Who would have known, the name I pick is the same as a restaurant. I wanted to change it before any trouble started, just to be safe.

1. Tell me a little something about yourself and your blog.
Well, my name is Sonya and I'm in the last few weeks of my freshmen year of college in my home state of New Hampshire. I'm studying to be a secondary education English teacher, because I'm a total word nerd. I just recently changed my blog's name because I felt like the old name didn't fit me anymore, and now it's like there's new life to the relationship I have with my blog. The new name came from the fact that not only am I in love with roller derby, but I've joined the league that's in the city my college is in (a huge convenience!), so I feel like that's becoming a really large part of me and it will therefore become a large part of my blog.

2. Where do you get your inspiration?
Everywhere. My blog doesn't have a specific theme or purpose, other than to (hopefully) amuse and inform people about my daily life and the odd thoughts that float around my head. So really anything that occurs during the day that I find even remotely interesting (and remember) goes into the blog. I also like sharing with other people who and what inspires me (for example, I rambled on for a paragraph or two in one entry about how much I adore Zooey Deschanel).

3. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?
Just because no one is commenting, it doesn't mean that no one is reading.

4. What is your favorite thing to blog about?
My friends and family, and just the crazy things they do. I find these people to be some of the most interesting in my world, so they're fun for me to talk about. And also my cat. Haha. :) And I try to blog even if I have a bad day, because I don't want to ignore the bad days or hide them from my readers, because that just doesn't seem realistic to me. I try to do it without whining, though.

5. What are some of your favorite things?
My boyfriend. My cat. Roller derby. Books. Knitting & crocheting. Snow. Cuddling. The Office. Writing notes and letters to special people. Penpals. Zombies. Tea. And probably a whole bunch of other things, but those are the most prominent right now.
7. What are you hopes and plans for the future?
To be a really awesome, interesting, and inspiring teacher. To get married and have really awesome, interesting, and inspiring children with my boyfriend. To be happy.

6. Anything else you would like to add?

Bento Boxes - A Japanese type of packed lunch.

The boxes usually are made up of dividers.

I've always wanted a bento box, (like the hamburger below!) so I could pack my lunch in it everyday. So cute! I love how decorative and unique many of the bento boxes are, and even the lunches inside of them. The panda bento lunch is almost too cute to eat!

It's finally here, the first blog interview from my "First five comments get a blog feature" post! From now on, whenever I make a post pertaining to my past blog post "contest" I am going to call it FFC. (First five comments) Just as an abbreviation instead of writing it out each time.

Here's the interview she kindly filled out.

1. Tell me a little something about yourself and you blog.

I'm a psychology major and English minor student from the Czech republic, currently in my final year for bachelor's. I live in the city of beer called Pilsen :) I was always kind of crafty - when I was small I was obsessed with drawing (my favourite things to draw were photo-like pictures :D), when I got older I was writing a lot. Then I switched to beads. Then to bookbinding. And right now I'm just playing with paper and I'm somewhere in the middle between bookmaking and scrapbooking. I've always loved journals and notebooks and I've sort of collected them but never really written anything in them because I didn't want to ruin them. Now when I'm able to make my own journals or jotters I think it won't be such big a deal to actually use them :D

I started my blog when I was in the middle of the bookbinding era. I found a couple of blogs on this topic and I thought it might have been cool to have my own. After a couple of posts it turned out to be rather an inspirational blog. I think that beautiful things should be shown to the world and spread..and that's exactly what I'm trying to do on my blog.

2. Where do you get your inspiration?

Well..pretty everywhere. I especially enjoy those *bam* moments where there an idea appears out of nowhere :) Usually I get inspired thanks to other blogs I follow. Sometimes I just brainstorm and play with different ideas and then after mixing them up I get the right one. Sometimes I just play with materials until there appears something I like. And of course, I can't forgot a huge source of inspiration -- my friends.

3. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?

I think that there's only one thing that's really needed -- you have to enjoy making the blog. You should find the right topic or theme that you would love to write about. I had had several blogs before but I never managed to keep them for a long time, just because I didn't know what to write about. Now I have the current blog for four months and I'm pretty sure it's not over yet at all! I'm just loving it!

My other advice is not to be afraid of making mistakes. We're just humans and we mistake a lot. So don't worry to play a bit with your design. Don't be afraid of people criticising you. I know it sucks when someone tells you that you make something wrong but these are the things that help us improve or at least thing about some things in a different way.

And whenever you get stuck you can there are hundreds of other blogs where you can get inspired and where you realize that you're not alone in the bloging business :)

4. What are some of your favorite things?

I call myself a practical person so I love almost anything that's both pretty and also pragmatic -- like my camera, my laptop, my MP3 player, notebooks and journals, of course, almost anything stationery-related (I'm the one who always carries at least one pen and then a highlighter or marker and I'm also the one who keeps sticking post its of various colours and shapes everywhere, and then keeps forgetting to actually read them :D).

5. Anything else you would like to add?

I know I'm no sage yet there's a thing I'd like to tell you: Look around yourself and don't be afraid to try things - because, as Shakespeare said, the world has music for those who listen :)

The Nautical Trend

One of my favorite trends arising for the summer/late spring is by far the nautical trend. I just love how there is such a summer/beach/boat feel to it.

I have found that Urban Outfitters have a large selection of nautical themed items, as well as ModCloth. Forever 21 also has a great selection of affordable clothes. I always love shopping at Forever 21, because you can get so much for so little money. I especially go there for basic clothing. I'm not going to pay $50 for a plain colored tank top, so Forever 21 it is. :) I am also working on getting more nautical jewelry at my shop soon!

I started out taking pictures of new products for my shop, but somehow got sidetracked and began taking other pictures. It's just such a beautiful day outside. Many of these pictures were taken on my deck outside. There is some sort of little egg outside our house, i'm not sure what type of bird it belong too. The poor little egg, must have gotten lost from its brothers and sister. :(

I plan on making these little cookies either tomorrow or Friday. I hoping they turn out like the picture :). These can be great cookies for Easter, but also just springtime.

Sugar Cookie Recipe:
Recipe found: here.

Ingredients

* 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
* 2 cups white sugar
* 4 eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 5 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
3. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

You can make homemade icing, but I am thinking of just buying a can of icing to ice these with.

Don't forget to pump out the icing through a tube! The easier way to do this would be to get a plastic bag and cut out a small corner. Then, add the icing to the bag and squeeze it. This is a very easy way to make cute designs when decorating.

Drilling Teeth

So I just got back from the dentist. :(

I had to get two cavities filled today. Which was not a very exciting part of my day. As a little background info, I have HORRIBLE teeth. It's more of a genetic thing, as my mom also has weak teeth. I brush and floss, but still manage to get cavities.

It's not so much getting the cavity filled that bothers me, but afterward. I hate the feeling of being numb in my mouth. Then my mouth always gets sore from the numbing needle.

On a good note, it's supposed to be getting warm out around here! On Sunday, it is supposed to be a high of 80 degrees and sunny. I am so excited! Just in time for Easter.

I want to do another nail tutorial soon, but I have to wait until my nails grow a bit longer. My nails always tend to crack so I need to cut them often.

Strappy/Gladiator Sandals

One of my favorite things about the summer and spring time is being able to wear sandals. Don't get me wrong, I love boots, and it's sometimes hard to part with them. This year I am absolutely in love with gladiator and strappy sandals. I was looking for these last year, but they seemed more difficult to find. Now they can be found almost anywhere.

Forever 21 is a great place to buy, well, anything. I love shopping there because the prices are so affordable. A skirt at $10 is almost impossible to find anywhere else! Not spending over $20, you can get a pair of gladiator shoes from them.

Urban Outfitters also has many great sandals. They tend to be a little bit more pricier than forever 21.

I am in love with these shoes from Modcloth.

These buckled wedges are great to wear with a dressier outfit, or just anytime. ;)

Hey everyone!

Sorry for not blogging for a few days! I just felt the need to take a little break. I seemed to have "bloggers block" and I wasn't getting any inspiration. I guess that happens sometimes. The more I blog, the more inspiration I get. If I stop for a few days, I get into the habbit of not blogging.

I added two new items to my shop. So exciting! I just love shopping for supplies to make new things. Theres a lot more comming soon, I am still waiting on a few shipments. My online shop is also comming soon. There is now a placeholder on the page at www.littleowlshop.com. I am so excited for this summer. This summer I will also be going to flea markets and craft shows selling my products.

Other than that, I think I am becomming addicted to sushi. I've had it for dinner two nights in a row. It's definitly one of my favorite foods. On Friday I ate at this cute little sushi bar restaurant with my aunt and uncle. I decided to be brave and try flying fish eggs. It sounds disgusting, but it is actually really good. They tend to "pop" in your mouth as you eat them. It was a different experience.

Happy Saturday!

The weather outside has been so nice lately! Today they want a high of 73 degrees. It has not been sunny here all winter, so this is a nice change. I'm always in a better mood when it's nice outside. I seem to want to get more done, etc.

I set up my webcam again! It's a bit grainy at the moment, but I hope that it will make it easier to do nail tutorials and take pictures.

Hope everyone has a great St. Patrick's Day! I'm not the least bit Irish, but it's still fun to wear green. I must say it has been a lucky day, my brother found 4 four leaf clovers outside. How weird is that? They are usually so hard to find!

I was watching TV today when I came across a movie called The Leprechaun. Apparently it's a horror movie about a little evil leprechaun. I usually really like horror movies, but this was just bad. I mean who thinks of making a movie about a serial killer leprechaun. I could be making false judgments and it could be a really good movie, but I have my doubts.

The Sioux Glasses in Black Lace

I find these glasses to be...intriguing. Not something I would personally wear on an everyday basis, but they sure are different looking.
Although they do not look like it, they are UVA&B protected.

Although for the price of $222? That price is way too high for glasses with lace stuck to them. These would be quite an easy DIY project. Protective goggles with lace glued on. I want to try and make these using a pair of my nerd glasses. It would be a different look than protective goggles, but we'll just have to see how this turns out.

A fun day of shopping...

Hello!

How was everyone's weekend? My weekend was good, for the most part.

Remember how I said that I was going to go and see Alice in Wonderland Saturday night? Well it turned out that they were sold out. There was a mall right across from the theater, so my friend and I went shopping!

There were so many good sales going on when we went. I'm guessing that most shops want to get rid of their winter items to make room for Spring clothes.

Here are a few things that I bought on our shopping adventure.

This adorable bicycle mug from Urban Outfitters. I just couldn't help myself, I have a thing for buying cute and random mugs.

Vinyl Mustache Stickers, once again from Urbanoutfitters. I stuck them on my wall behind a shelf in my bedroom. It is now my "mustache wall."

Of course I had to stop at the Mac store. I got a brown tone eyeshadow in a color called "Sable." I have been looking for a lot of neutral tone eyeshadow lately. I think it's because I tend to go for crazy colors when buying eyeshadow, and then when I want to use browns I don't have any.

Along with these things I also bought some new clothes for spring. I really love a lot of the spring fashions this year. Floral prints are my favorite!

Vegan Cookie Recipe

Happy Thursday!

I wanted to share this recipe on my blog for a while now. I love these cookies, they always end up tasting so good. I found the recipe from vegweb.com. Which is one of my favorite vegan websites!

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 cups unbleached flour
2 tsps baking powder
1/2 tsp.salt
cinnamon to taste (optional)
vegan chocolate or carob chips - put in as many as you like
1 cup raw sugar (turbinado #1, sucanat works too but sucks up a lot of the moisture)
1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup water

Directions:

VERY IMPORTANT-make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. It will work if they're not at room temp but it works MUCH better if they are. Also while your oven is pre-heating put the cookie sheets you are going to use on top of the oven so they get preheated as well. Preheat oven to 350.

In a large bowl mix flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon (if you choose). Add chips. Make a well in the center and set aside.

In a medium size bowl mix vegan sugar and oil. Mix it well. Add the vanilla and then add the water. Mix it well. Add the wet to the well in the dry. Mix it well but be careful not to overwork it. Add more chips if you need to. Spoon onto ungreased cookie sheets. Put them in the oven. Bake for 5 minutes and then flip and rotate the sheets.(top to bottom,and 180 degree rotation) Bake another 4 minutes and check them.

The cookies are done when they seem a little bit softer then you want them to be. They will harden up some as they cool. I usually go in two minute increments from here untill they get to where I like them.
Preparation time: 15 mins?-10 to 12 cooking time

This spring 2010, a lot of patterns are going to be in style. Floral prints were big last year, but according to style.com, the more patterns the better.

Patterns can get a little scary when matching together. Matching two different patterns together can either look great, or look like you picked clothes out of your closet with your eyes closed.

Since people don't dress in runway fashions in real life, I put together a bunch of cute patterned clothes.

3. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?
If you want to blog then you must have the "will" the blog first. *laughs* Make sure your posts are interesting to read but don't you ever wR!t3 L!k3 tH!s oK? It will make your posts difficult to understand.

After I graduate from my high school I will enter any university in Japan so that I will become a dentist or maybe a graphic artist. I haven't decide it yet.. Geez, it drives me nut!

My name is Lizz and I'm from Maine. Most of my time is spent at school...I'm majoring in social and behavioral science. I'm graduating in May and then plan to work for awhile before going to get my masters in either forensic psychology or forensic mental health. I've always wanted to do something where I helped people...and then I got really into forensics, so why not combine the 2? What else?...I'm an animal lover and a huge lover of PETA and ASPCA. And I LOVE penpals :)

2. Where do you get your inspiration for blogging?

I used to blog a lot in high school when livejournal and greatestjournal were big. I stopped for a long time and then recently got back into it on Tumblr. I started following a lot of celebrity blogs on there but lately I felt like it wasn't really personal so that's why I started a blogspot. I feel like a lot of the people on here are more genuine. That probably didn't even answer the question...ha.

4. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?

I think anyone can start blogging. It doesn't have to be popular or have a bunch of people following it. A blog can be for someone like me who just wants to write about their day or whatever. On the other hand, I think blogs are a great way for people to promote their businesses or artwork. If that's what you're looking to do, my advice would be to just put yourself out there. Find people who are willing to advertise your blog. Just have fun :)

5. What is one of your favorite stores to shop at?

I looooove Forever 21. I think that's my favorite store right now. It varies though. There are a few local shops where I live that I love as well.

EVERYWHERE! I get inspired by so many things! A stranger helping another stranger to just going on a long walk outside- you can find inspiration from anything! My excuse for eating so much Dove chocolate is because of their inspiring little sayings on the wrappers like my favorite "Make the most of today!"

4. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start blogging?
from the wise words of Nike- JUST DO IT. I was so nervous and apprehensive about starting a blog. I always stopped myself thinking my life wasn't as put together or perfect as everyone else's. Or maybe I wasn't exactly where I wanted to be in life.. but I finally realized that the beauty of my story is that it is not perfect or mess-free. but more chaotically wonderfully and absolutely me. and I think everyone has such a unique story! So stay true to who you are and start a blog! so I can read it!

5. What is your favorite thing to blog about??
I love to blog about the little joys in the day and adventures I happen to have! I try to have a positive attitude and I tend to be care free so I just have fun with it! I love trying to things and then writing about it! Also I love posting new recipes I try! {and maybe even a few baking blunders... whoops!}

6. What are some of your favorite things?
SUNFLOWERS {a boy who brings me sunflowers is a boy who has my heart!} guilty pleasure TV shows! {30 rock, Sex and the City, Friends, The Office.. just to name a few!} cinnamon muffins accompanied with some tea, sunny walks, dance parties, picnics at the park, board game marathons, PB&J sandwiches, writing letters, and those fleeting memories that can be so precious.

7. Anything else you would like to add?
Probably just one of my favorite quotes, it was on one of my journals and it's been my favorite ever since! I actually wrote it on a post it and taped it to my laptop!

Sorry for a bit of an absence, considering I try to blog everyday, but I have been having a not-so-good week and have been very busy.

So, here is the story. About a week ago I finally was able to get a new phone.

Right now it is missing, and has been for the past two days. I have no possible clue what could have happened to it. I feel so lost without my phone. I would check the weather on it, write to do lists, ect. I can only hope that I find it soon.

I am praying that it does not look like this and is safe right now.

...Chanel's Jade Green Nail Polish going for $100 and over on ebay. I first saw this green color, and fell in love with it. It reminds of a minty green, perfect for March. I checked the Chanel site for it only to find out that they were sold out. Then I checked ebay to find it wildly overpriced.

I am currently on the lookout for a cheaper version of this color.

Happy Sunday! I put together a little list of photos for some inspiration. I have not been feeling too great the past couple of days. I think I am fighting off a cold. I have been extremely tired and have had on and off stomach aches. We'll have to see if I get sick or not. I have been drinking a lot of water and taking vitamins, so I am hoping to fight it off.

Well, i'm off to go package a ton of orders to ship out tomorrow. Since there was a big snowstorm last week I was not able to ship anything out, so now I have to ship it all tomorrow.

Chile Earthquake?

I woke up this morning to find out that (another) horrible disaster had occured. Early this morning an earthquake had hit Chile.

They are saying that this earthquake was actually rated higher than the Haiti earthquake, rating an 8.8.

Now tnakfully, not NEARLY as many were killed. I just read an article that says as far as they know 78 people have been killed. This number could grow as they find out more. That is still terribly sad. 78 innocent people were woken up and killed by this horrible earthquake?

TWO earthquakes have hit in the last couple of months. Do you think there is more to come? Now they are saying that it will trigger a tsunami. I certainly hope not!

Flu and Snow

...I woke up this morning to find out that it was snowing, and my little sister had gotten the stomach flu overnight. The weather channel is calling this storm a "paralyzing blizzard' due to the high winds and amount of snow we are receiving.

My mom bought us all masks so that we do not catch it. I have a REALLY weak immune system. I tend to get sick very easily.

It is kind of hard to breathe with these masks on.

Sorry for the messy hair, sweatshirt, and no makeup. I just woke up an hour ago.

Throughout tonight and tomorrow they are calling for (another) huge snowstorm in my area. I am excited! I love the snow. Especially when it first falls. After a couple days long it does get a bit dirty, but I would MUCH rather have snow on the ground then cold and dry weather.

Designer...Fast Food?

Now I must say, these foods look delicious. Mostly the packaging. Although I do love frozen yogurt.

Fast food on the other hand, yuck! I am not a big fan of Mcdonalds, or any fast food place for that matter. I just always feel gross and sick after eating it. It is almost as if I feel "greasy" from eating greasy food. Who would have known?

See...it looks absolutely adorable, but it just does not taste as good as it looks.

Not necessarily, but I do put headbands in my hair with the clap of my hands.

I was experimenting with the video feature on my camera, so this is how it turned out.

Shrapnel Manicures?

I found these here, and thought that they were quite interesting.

These nails are embellished with "metal shavings" and were spotted on the Fall/Winter 2010 runway.

Ouch, I would hate to be scratched with these nails. Metal shavings? They look interesting, but not very practical for everyday, that's for sure.

I'm sure everyone has noticed this already, but I have changed my blog layout slightly. I felt as though the old layout made it harder to read posts, and you would need to click on each individual one to read it. This way it is much easier to just scroll down and read everything. Not to mention look at all the pictures that were not getting attention due to that reason.

I am currently in the process of getting ready for the new giveaway that I will be posting tomorrow! I am so excited! Plus I have a tutorial coming soon. I always feel like when I try to set an "exact" date for something, it never works out. I always end up slacking. I am trying to break that habit. From now on whatever I say, will be on that day!
